Learn some of the basic Vocabulary with me. Words that will help in your travels and are just good things to know.
The worst part about learning any language is the Vocabulary. No matter how it’s done, it is truly just about memorizing and practicing. Nobody likes it. Well, I am here to tell you, I am not imaginative enough to make this piece a lot of fun either, but I sure will try. I am not going to put a huge list of things together that you, as a tourist won’t ever use, but to start out, you definitely should know at least the numbers up to 100 to help with currency, and the basic colors.
Here are the numbers.
- Eins
- Zwei
- Drei
- Vier
- Fünf
- Sechs (yes, it sounds exactly like adult bed gymnastics)
- Sieben
- Acht
- Neun
- Zehn
- Elf (no not santas helper, though it sounds similar)
- Zwölf
- Dreizehn
- Vierzehn
- Fünfzehn
- Sechszehn
- Siebzehn
- Achtzehn
- Neunzehn
- Zwanzig
At this point I will list the tens. Starting with Twenty. Germans just add things together to make longer numbers. For example the direct translation for 55 is “Five and Fifty” or in German “Fünfundfünzig”.
- 30. Dreißig
- 40. Vierzig
- 50. Fünfzig
- 60. Sechszig
- 70. Siebzig
- 80. Achtzig
- 90. Neunzig
- 100. Einhundert
I say the best way to practice numbers is to just do some math, don’t worry, this will be very simple stuff that everybody should be able to do, and if not use a calculator (I won’t judge, promise). Listen to what I am saying and then see if you can fill in the blanks. I provided the solutions to each problem, to help you figure out the Problem. I’ll provide the answers at the bottom of the test.
_ + _ = 12
_ + _ = 18
_ + _ = 54
_ + _ = 29
_ + _ = 38
_ + _ = 49
_ + _ = 76
One last thing about Numbers, Specifically the One!
One, the number, is a bit of a tricky little witch. The number is “Eins” as mentioned above, but depending on gender of the word you will be using “Ein” or “Eine” instead. I’d love to say it’s always the female noun, but that is simple not true, since for example “A goose” is “Eine Gans”. At this point I’d say it’s more about which one rolls of the tongue cleaner. “Ein Gans” just doesn’t sound right.
Lets talk about Colors
Rot
Grün
Blau
Gelb
Lila
Braun
Grau
Schwarz
Weiß
A quick note. Generally when using a Color to describe something, you will add an “E” to the end of the color. So for example, it’s the “blaue” car.
Let’s practice this by combining Colors and Numbers. Listen to what I say and figure out what it is. These are all numbers of a certain color. So for example, I may say “a black two” or “a purple fifty five”. I’ll provide the solutions at the end of blog post.
Numbers and Colors are important in the world. You will use numbers when ordering things, when counting out your money or even when giving out the time. Color describe everything in the world. From the blue Portable bathroom, to the Green police Car. It’s important to know these things, so practice them and if you have suggestions on how I could make this more fun for you in an upcoming post, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
