Where?

One of the most common reasons to even start a conversation with a complete stranger is to simply ask where something is. Obviously this is not a very long blog post, as there are only so many ways to ask where something is. I will throw some vocabulary at you as well though, just some of the most common things you may ask.

Wo?

This is the direct translation for “Where”. If you get nothing else out of this page, just remember this one word. As a tourist you can simply go “Wo (insert location)” and you will be helped. Though keep in mind, that’s the equivalent to you asking “Where (insert location)”, it is absolutely horrible grammar but will get the job done.

Wo ist die/der/das?

This is the very simple “Where is the?”. Fill in any word as long as you know the correct Article of “der, die, das”.

Ich suche die/den/das

“I am looking for the”

“Können sie mir den weg zur (location) zeigen?”

“Could you show me the way to (location)?” (formal)

“Kannst du mir then weg zur (location) zeigen?”

“Could you show me the way to (location)?” (informal)

Simple right? Learn the very easy phrase first, especially if you need to know how to ask for location now. But the others are nice to know, especially if you are trying to actually learn German for more than just a simple trip.

Here is some vocabulary of popular locations or things you may ask for.

“Das WC”, “Die Toilette”, “Das Klo”

All three words mean Toilette. Asking for the “ das WC” is the “cleaner” version, while simply asking for the “ die Toilette” or “das Klo” is the very informal and direct way.

“nähste”

Nearest

“die Kneipe”

Bar (alcohol)

“das Lebensmittelgeschäft”

The Grocery Store

” die Bus Haltestelle”

Bus stop

“der Bahnhof”

Train Stop

“der Flughafen”

Airport

Lets Practice! (answers at the bottom of the page)

1) Where is the bus stop?

2) I am looking for the nearest Grocery Store”

3) Could you show me the way to the nearest bar? (formal)

4) Could you show me the way to the toilette? (informal)

And just for giggles

(Where is the Mailman that made fun of you?)
