I will keep it short this week. I want to go over some of my favorite resources available right now that allow you to immerse yourself a bit, without having to necessarily having to leave the comfort of your home.
First off, yes I do have a post about it already, but that was done about 8 years ago, and it’s never a bad idea to talk about it somewhere.
Youtube has grown a lot, you can now actually legally find full episodes of shows and things. Sesame street exists in Germany as well and is still a great way to learn the language. Do a search for “Sesamstraße Deutsch”.
You can look for things like “Sendung mit der Maus” which is a educational kids show, the german is simple, and you may learn how things are made.
Also don’t forget about your favorite streaming Service. Something like Netflix or Crunchyroll has a lot of Shows dubbed in German or at minimum provide German subtitles.
If you are into reading, “Project Guthenberg” https://www.gutenberg.org/ is great because it has any book out of copywrite, but not just English books, you can find German books also. Same with Archive.org, this site retains things that were published to the internet, so you can usually find books, comics etc.
I want to make a mention though, do yourself a favor, don’t just google translate things you don’t know. Do a full breakdown of what ever you are doing. For example.
“Ich gebe dir mein Spielzeug zum spielen”. You may already know enough german, you can figure out that this means “I am giving you my toy to play with”.
- What is “Spielzeug”? It’s a compound word, made of what words?
- What is zum? I thought it meant “for?”
- What other words can I find that I could use instead of spielen? Do i use the same word when saying I want to play the guitar?
Be curious, break things down, figure it out. You will forget a simple translation, but a proper research will stick with you.
See you all next time.
